“Eeeek!!! Girl, I’m so excited for you. You’re gonna be looking real good in your dress.” Teeyana and I squeal and link our arms as we walk down the street to Kleinfeld Bridal store. Behind us are Teeyana’s mom, her dad, her brother Danny, her Aunt Bella, and also her grandpa.

“Amara, I’m so nervous. What if I don’t find the dress here? We'll have to start all over again.” Worry lines crease up her forehead.

I ain’t gonna lie, I’ve thought about that too, but now is not the time to let my worries reflect on Teeyana. I need to keep making her believe everything is possible.

“Nuh-uh.” I hold her at arm’s length as we pause in the middle of the sidewalk. “Repeat after me, ‘I am going to find my dress today.’” I stare at her dark brown eyes.

Teeyana sighs and pulls down her winter hat. “I...I will find—”

“Nuh-uh, that ain’t loud enough, girl. You better say it with your chest now.”

Teeyana chuckles, and the worry disappears from her eyes. “I will find my dress today.” She lifts her chin and nods as she says it louder.

“There you go. That’s my girl. Now, let’s go find that dress.” We link our arms again when our crowd meets us. Grandpa Thompson is walking hand-in-hand with Aunt Bella, balancing on his walking stick.

Mr. and Mrs. Sparks are holding Danny’s hands and walking beside him. It's a week before Christmas and the streets of Atlanta are buzzing as always with Christmas music, excited children, and stressed adults running around trying to make the money to get them through the holiday season.

We drove down here from Grandpa Thompson’s house in two cars, which are now parked five minutes away from the bridal shop. We’re all dressed in our thick coats, winter hats, and snow-friendly boots. It snowed the night before, but since the sun is back up this morning, there are only sparse heaps of snow scattered along our path.

Walking past several restaurants, a library, and two coffee shops, we finally reach the bridal shop. Outside, a glass window looms over us, and behind it are two mannequins with the most beautiful and classy wedding dresses on them. One of them is an A-line dress with a halter-neckline while the other is a ball-gown with an off-shoulder neckline, lots of bling, and lots of lace.

Teeyana and I stop in front of the dresses, staring at them as if we’ve just seen a UFO drop from the sky. Without saying a word to each other, we turn around and squeal together. Teeyana has to try on the ball gown.

Mr. Sparks pushes the front door open and walks with us to the reception area where we check in. Then, in a single file, we head to the waiting area and make ourselves comfortable on the white sofas.

Behind the sofas is a long line of white and ivory sample wedding dresses on hangers stretching farther than my eyes can see. There are different styles of lace, chiffon, taffeta, and satin.
